Corry resident Jeff Rathbun can draw from a wide array of life experiences when he creates artwork, and he is available for anyone who may need his skills for such things as flyers, cards, cartoons or other materials.
A 1965 graduate of Corry Area High School, Rathbun studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for two years and at Ohio University.
“I was caught in the last draft of the Vietnam war,” Rathbun said in an email interview. “The army felt it had a greater need for an infantryman than an artist, and I was soon brandishing an M-16, rather than a paintbrush.”
Rathbun said he luckily escaped Vietnam and ended up in The Old Guard, the army’s official ceremonial unit, serving Arlington Cemetery.
Eventually the army did make use of Rathbun’s talents, and he designed and illustrated a program for “Prelude to Taps,” an annual presentation attended by the president and other dignitaries.
He was also asked to paint a caricature of Col. Robert M. Daugherty, the commanding officer of the Military District of Washington, D.C, to be presented as a gift on his retirement.
After being discharged in 1971, Rathbun went to Temple University on the GI bill and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications.
Several years later, he moved to Long Island and raised a family while working in different industries. His cartoons and illustrations were shown at a local library at one point, which led to his freelancing for Spindex Corp., where he wrote and drew Scrachn’ Sniff Valentine’s Day cards, created educational tools, activity books and other children’s products.
Rathbun returned to Corry in 2002, when his mother became ill. She died in 2003, and Rathbun has remained in town.
He joined Pennwriters and won Best Short Story in its writing competition in 2005, 2008 and 2012.
