Trump’s pick for deputy chief of policy shuts down tax agenda rumors: 'Delaying' reform not being considered

Incoming Deputy Chief of Policy Stephen Miller dispelled speculation on Sunday that comprehensive tax reform could be delayed after President-elect Donald Trump takes office next month, insisting that the issue will be a top priority addressed immediately after the border.

"We're talking January, early February," he said, providing a timeline for when Congress could pivot from border security to taxes.

"…[A comprehensive tax reform package is] where you have to figure out SALT [state and local deductions]. That's where you're going to figure out different policy baselines that you're going to use for the tax cuts, about corporate tax reform, about trade reform, manufacturing reform, and all those tax policies."

"With the two or three seat majority in the House, obviously that's going to take some time, but nobody, I repeat, nobody is even talking or considering delaying tax [reform]."

He reiterated shortly after, "Tax reform will happen, and it will be the greatest tax bill that we've ever seen. Now, these are not final. These are ongoing discussions and negotiations, but I just want to be very clear that no one is talking about delaying tax reform."

Ushering in sweeping change would start with addressing the border crisis, with investments to increase the number of ICE officers on duty as well as full funding for other security measures, including barriers and technology that could help mitigate the mass influx of illegal immigrants that entered during the Biden administration.

"You're talking about what would be the largest investment in immigration and border security," Miller said.

"There's some of the Republicans have been talking about for decades, but with Donald Trump, this is something that is going to happen. It will be the most important and significant domestic policy achievement in half a century."
